45 years of IPIECA
For 45 years IPIECA has been working with its members to advance the global oil and gas industry’s environmental and social performance. On 13 March 1974, IPIECA was established at the request of United Nations Environment (formerly UNEP) to develop a shared industry response to environmental and social issues.
"BP’s association with IPIECA spans 45 years. That’s over 4 decades of bringing our industry together to develop and share good practices to manage environmental and social challenges. The world faces many pressing issues currently, and our industry has a part to play. IPIECA’s role will be to continue to harness these efforts and those of civil society. So long as we choose the path of collaboration and innovation, both our industry and the world have a great future ahead – one that will help solve the dual challenge of more energy with less emissions."
"Chevron is focused on delivering the energy that improves lives and enables human progress. Life depends on affordable, reliable and ever-cleaner energy, and we are always evolving to ensure we deliver greater benefit with less environmental impact. For 45 years, IPIECA has had the same focus. It has provided an important global forum for industry to share and promote best practices around environmental and social issues – while engaging key global stakeholders and scanning the horizon to ensure we are prepared to meet growing expectations. Progress is not possible without partnerships. We are proud to work with IPIECA to continue advancing our industry’s social and environmental performance around the world."
"Through collaboration with a wide range of international stakeholders, IPIECA has fostered improved industry performance on multiple environmental and social issues. IPIECA’s efforts have enhanced oil spill response preparedness; created a global water resource tool; implemented a mitigation hierarchy for biodiversity risks; and helped industry focus on social issues like human rights. In the climate change debate, IPIECA’s reports titled The Paris Puzzle and Exploring Low-Emission Pathways provided a unified industry voice on issues that should be considered as governments address climate change policy. IPIECA’s ability to achieve collaboration among stakeholders will be essential to society’s efforts to manage long-term transitions in energy supply while also ensuring continued economic growth."
"IPIECA plays a key role in seeking solutions to some of the most crucial environmental and social challenges that the oil & gas industry is facing today. We value its expertise, its continued efforts in promoting knowledge and shaping shared solutions. Participating in its working groups is an enrichment for each of our people at Eni. IPIECA will continue to be a central player in fostering cooperation within our industry and with international partners."
"In Equinor we believe that collaboration is key to achieve our purpose of turning natural resources into energy for people and progress for society. When dealing with global challenges related to climate, environment and social issues – collaboration will be essential. IPIECA is an organization that brings the global oil and gas industry together and provides us with the opportunity to share, learn and develop good practices efficiently. Equinor appreciates the commitment and insight that IPIECA has provided for 45 years."
"ExxonMobil values IPIECA’s efforts to help advance our industry’s environmental and social performance. As an active member of IPIECA since its inception, we appreciate the public-private collaborations IPIECA facilitates with a variety of stakeholders, particularly the United Nations Environment Programme. We look forward to working with IPIECA for the next 45 years and beyond to promote the positive impact the oil and gas industry has on society."
"IPIECA is an informative forum for continuing discussions with global oil and gas companies, particularly in the focus areas of social responsibility, climate change, and sustainability reporting. IPIECA significantly contributes to the industry by developing guidelines and position papers in these areas. In addition, its workshops guide and educate members through these challenging topics. INPEX was involved in the process of developing IPIECA’s “The Paris Puzzle”, in 2015,which then formed the basis of our own climate position paper. In future years, as an ExCom member, INPEX would like to continue to promote and further strengthen collaboration among IPIECA members."
"Today the oil & gas industry must reliably deliver affordable energy for a sustainable supply while conducting business responsibly and protecting the environment. In this way OMV aims to provide `oil & gas at its best´. IPIECA plays a major role not only in facilitating experience exchange but also in supporting the fostering and improvement of industrywide guidelines as well as sharing best practices and toolkits with regard to environmental and social performance."
Berhard Heneis, Head of Sustainability and Reporting
"In a rapidly changing world that presents many challenges and opportunities for the oil and gas sector in areas such as the environment, the growth of renewables, social responsibility and addressing public perception issues, IPIECA makes an invaluable global contribution.
"Today’s multifaceted oil and gas industry and rapidly changing world, demands closer partnership between oil and gas companies. As a member of IPIECA, PTTEP has had an excellent association with IPIECA, and, over the years, we have been fully supportive of the sustainability policies under IPIECA. Enabling the building of productive dialogue and activities between member companies, IPIECA provides an invaluable opportunity to collaborate and initiate fruitful exchanges between industry and our stakeholders."
"IPIECA’s 45-year history of shared knowledge and good practices has helped achieve excellence in sustainability, not just for members but for the overall industry, thanks to the openness and willingness to work together of all involved. The challenge for the future lies in that, together, we must continue to guarantee a competitive, sustainable and affordable energy supply for a growing world while working to ever-higher standards of efficiency and transparency. To this end, I believe IPIECA can continue play a central role in lifting collective industry performance."
"IPIECA’s Environmental, Social and Governance leadership benefits the entire E&P industry. As IPIECA’s first associate member, we have derived tremendous value through our participation on the various social and environmental sustainability committees. By working closely with other IPIECA members, we have strengthened our Global Stewardship program, which is our blueprint for deploying technology and processes to optimize our global operations and reduce the environmental footprint. We are proud to be members of the IPIECA team, and we look forward to continuing on our journey to protect the world’s natural resources for the generations to come."
"IPIECA has played an important role in many of our industry’s advances over the past four decades, with shared best practices enabling significant progress across a wide range of environmental and social issues. Shell…sees an important role for IPIECA in the coming years. The challenges the world faces in managing the stresses between demands for energy, water and food are too large for any individual company to tackle alone. Greater levels of collaboration and trust are needed between government, business and civil society to address these challenges and create shared value. Working with a range of partners helps us to develop practical solutions that can be implemented across our industry to reduce out impacts and create broader benefits for society."
"IPIECA has a fundamental role to play in bringing the oil and gas industry and stakeholders together around best environmental and social practices. It’s an association in which we are preparing the future together, building on the industry’s past experience. Regarding the Sustainable Development Goals, we can be proud that IPIECA was behind one of the first industry initiatives with the Sustainable Development Goals Atlas. The continued development of the Global Initiative for oil spill response is also very positive for our industry. Lastly, methods and tools like the Local Water Tool have become an important resource for Total in successfully managing its water risk."
"Over the past 45 years, IPIECA has succeeded in consolidating the environmental and social ambitions of many oil and gas companies by developing, sharing and promoting good practices and knowledge - into a strong industrial position. By this, we can show that our industry is key for a responsible and sustainable energy supply now and in the future."
