IPIECA & OGP hold formal UN observer status as non-governmental organisations. Thus, the BDWG provides direct interface with the UN Convention on Biological Diversity, allowing members access to negotiations such as the Conference of Parties, keeping members informed of developments and representing the industry where appropriate. IPIECA aims to raise awareness and keep members informed of developments in the international negotiations, ensure industry representation at appropriate forums and provide constructive input on biodiversity reports and assessments. In 2008, the BDWG produced a “Guide to the CBD,” which explains the negotiations process and highlights its relevance to IPIECA/OGP members and ways they can engage.
