China’s fast growing economy has led to increased demand for energy and resources. As demand grows, international and Chinese extractive companies are investing in oil, gas and mining development within China, and Chinese companies are actively exploring abroad. In view of this, companies must proactively mitigate potential impacts in sensitive areas. Environmental, Social and Health Impact Assessments (ESHIA) evaluate the possible impacts of a potential project so that environmental considerations can inform and be integrated into project decisions. In conducting ESHIAs, companies are expected to adhere to both national and international standards, such as those set by the World Bank and International Finance Corporation. Integrating biodiversity and ecosystem services into the ESHIA process presents a practical way to bring biodiversity conservation into project planning.
Aimed at extractive industry environmental managers, government authorities, NGOs and academia, this workshop:
- Introduced biodiversity challenges and responses in the extractive industries in China
- Provided the context for ESHIA in China
- Shared experiences on the development of biodiversity standards in ESHIA
- Discussed issues faced by industry in the ESHIA process and how to improve the ESHIA process in China
- Provided a forum for discussion and identify opportunities for future collaboration
