IPIECA Participation at PAJ Oil Spill Symposium

The 2008 International Oil Spill Symposium organised by the Petroleum Association of Japan (PAJ) took place from 21-22 February in Tokyo, Japan. The Executive Secretary of IPIECA, Richard Sykes, was invited to give the keynote speech at this event. IPIECA Participation in EMSA Communications Workshop, Lisbon, 18 October 2007

IPIECA, represented by Chris Morris, took part in the EMSA Communications Workshop which took place in Lisbon on the 18th October 2007. 50 representatives from Member States maritime administrations, the media and industry met to exchange experiences on communications relating to marine pollution incidents. There was a consensus that effective communication is crucial during a crisis, based on honesty, accuracy, availability, empathy and a will to work together, using clear language.

Sixth International Mobilization, Preparedness & Response Exercise (MOBEX), 4-6 December 2007

MOBEX Panama was hosted by Panama Canal Authority (Autoridad de Canal de Panama-ACP), and took place between 4-6 December 2007, in the Gamboa area of Panama City adjacent to the Panama Canal. Additionally, an IOSC Pre-Conference Workshop was held on 3 December 2007.

MOBEX is designed to demonstrate, exercise, and test Clean Caribbean and Americas’ (CCA) ability to integrate its Tier 3 resources into the host government's national response system and local company's contingency response plans (Tier 1 and 2).

Representatives from a number of international and regional organizations involved in oil spill preparedness and response participated in MOBEX Panama.



Arctic Frontiers conference, Tromsø, Norway, 20-25 January 2008

The 2nd annual Arctic Frontiers conference, "Oil and Gas - Political, Social and Scientific Challenges in the Arctic" took place in Tromsø, Norway, from 20-25 January 2008. The event was hosted by the University of Tromsø, and organised and financed by stakeholders from the private and public sector. Oil and gas activities in the Arctic and the challenges presented for society and the environment were discussed at the event.



OGP Cold Climate Workshop, London, 12-13 February 2008

OGP organised a ‘cold climate’ workshop in London from 12-13 February 2008. The cold climate topic was broken up into smaller areas which were the focus of the workshop:
  • Ice
  • Health
  • Environment (including oil spills)
  • Safety
  • Engineering (including structures, pipelines, logistics etc)

The aim of the workshop was to identify which areas listed above require further attention with the possibility of setting industry standard guidelines.

IMO/IPIECA/OSRL Workshop in East Asia, Manila, 24 November 2009

A workshop organized by IPIECA, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and Oil Spill Response (OSR) will take place in Manila, Philippines on Tuesday 24 November 2009 alongside the East Asia Seas Congress (EAS) 2009. This event titled the Workshop on Government/Industry Partnerships for Effective and Consistent, Preparedness and Response to Marine Pollution in East Asia will address major issues currently faced by countries in East Asia with particular emphasis on:

  • Regional arrangements for pollution response in East Asia’s High-Risk areas;
  • Challenges in regional government-industry co-operation for spill response;
  • Lessons learned from various regional arrangements: A common model for the region?
  • “Working Together” to Integrate regional, national and local stakeholders for oil spill preparedness and response; and
  • Recent developments in Claims and Compensation for Oil Spills.
