IMO/IPIECA Global Initiative

In 1996, the Global Initiative (GI) - a joint programme between IPIECA and the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) - was formally launched in South Africa. Then, as now, its aim was to enhance oil spill preparedness and response capacity for marine spills at priority locations around the World. Many years on, the partners have much to congratulate themselves on - and much more work still to do!

GI WACAF launch, Gabon, 24-28 April 2006
GI Aims
Assist countries in developing a national structure for oil spill response and preparedness
Encourage the ratification and implementation of Conventions including:
the International Conventions on Oil Pollution, Preparedness, Response and Cooperation, 1990 (OPRC Convention);
and the Conventions relating to Liability and compensation 1992 Civil Liability Convention (CLC) and 1992 Fund Convention
