The active engagement of GI participants in the planning and delivering of regional workshops and training courses around the world has contributed to the promotion of best practice for oil spill preparedness and response; the ratification of OPRC and relevant conventions; and has encouraged better and more frequent communication and cooperation between Government and industry. A key success for GI has been a surge of ratifications to IMO conventions since its inception.
A regional model for GI
In addition to developing the WACAF project, the Global Initiative
has continued to lead and inspire oil spill response training
courses, contingency planning workshops and exercises around
the world, mainly organised on a regional basis. There are three fully developed GI regional groups (MOIG, OSPRI and WACAF) and a number of GI-style regional cooperation arrangements all adopting a regional approach to furthering the aims of the Global Initiative. For more information on the regional groups, please click here.
Working together
The GI Programme has been jointly led over the years by the IMO and IPIECA, with strong participation from the International Tankers Owners Pollution Federation (ITOPF), the industry-funded Tier 3 oil spill centres, as well as the leveraged contribution of the Industry members themselves. This wide stakeholder base ensures that the message of best practices combined with the 'working together' approach for oil spill response and preparedness is delivered to as many groups as possible.
