The Issue
Oil spills can have a significant impact on ecosystems, amenities
and livelihoods. While the initial focus must be on prevention, the
industry also gives high priority to developing comprehensive and
well-rehearsed contingency plans that will ensure prompt response to
minimise the impact of an oil spill. As a significant number of countries
are still not adequately prepared, working closely with national and
local governments to build and sustain response capacity at all levels is vitally important.
Industry activities
Since the 1970s there has been a significant reduction in the number of large oil spills from tankers. This decline in spills can be attributed to the successful preventive actions of the IMO and the oil and shipping industry.
Working through organisations such as IPIECA, OGP, OCIMF and INTERTANKO, and in association with UNEP and the IMO, the industry has designed and promoted numerous methods of preventing spills and enhancing preparedness and response mechanisms in the unfortunate event of a spill.
