Human Rights and Ethics mini-report
Published: 2008

The oil and gas industry operates in some of the most challenging places in the world and faces complex human rights-related issues both at home and abroad. Ensuring good human rights policy and practice, both internally and externally, has therefore become a critical issue.

This publication describes some of the ways in which oil and gas companies are actively involved in promoting human rights and ethical business practices at the operations level and in international policy discussions. The report summarizes IPIECA activities on human rights and ethics, and highlights related efforts by IPIECA oil and gas member companies. These efforts are illustrated by representative case studies and related industry-led partnership projects.

Human Rights Training Toolkit for the Oil and Gas Industry - 2nd edition
Published: 2009

The oil and gas industry operates in some of the most challenging places in the world, and can face complex human rights related issues. The subject of human rights has risen rapidly on the oil and gas industry agenda. Recognising the importance of this issue, IPIECA members developed a Training Toolkit to raise awareness of human rights issues in the oil and gas industry.

The Training Toolkit provides managers with a template that can be used and adapted to conform to a company’s policy or position on human rights and applicable domestic laws and regulations. This Toolkit is not intended to be an in-depth instruction on how to conduct human rights training.

The Toolkit consists of an introduction and four sections:
Introduction (Word, 752KB)
Presentation with the key messages for use in a training session (PPT, 2.7MB)
Workbook to be used in conjunction with the presentation (Word, 3.8MB)
Trainer's manual (Word, 419KB)
A resource guide(Word, 96KB)

A hard copy of the Training Toolkit, which contains a CD-ROM with all of the necessary materials, can be requested directly from the IPIECA Secretariat.

Introduction et vue d’ensemble (Word, 753KB)

Human Rights Policy Implementation in the Oil and Gas Sector

Tamara Bekefi, an independent consultant, was commissioned by IPIECA to investigate human rights policy implementation within the oil and gas sector. This useful resource document examines the practical ways in which the oil and gas sector has been grappling with human rights in its day-to-day operations, with the aim to try to assist IPIECA member companies to translate policy into practice . It is descriptive rather than prescriptive and is not meant to represent consensus among the widely varying views held by member companies.

IBLF Guide to Human Rights Impact Assesment and Management road-testing draft

IBLF have partnered with the International Finance Corporation and the United Nations Global Compact in producing this guide which aims to provide companies with a practical process to assess their business risks, enhance their due diligence procedures and effectively manage their human rights challenges.

This guide is a work in progress, and this draft version has been published to allow companies from different business sectors to test it in practice. The experience gained from the road-testing will be used to further refine the guide. A revised version of the guide will be published by mid-2009.

If your company is interested in formally road-testing the guide, or if you would like to informally feedback to the IBLF on the guide during this trial period, please contact Désirée Abrahams, HRIA Project Manager on: desiree.abrahams@iblf.org or by phone at +44 (0)20 7467 3602.
