Key Topics
The following list of key topics cover some of the main activity areas addressed by the SRWG. This list is not exhaustive, and the SRWG is continually reviewing issues of emerging importance. The result of ongoing task forces’ work will be updated as appropriate.
Human Rights
The oil and gas industry operates in some of the most challenging places in the world, and can face complex human rights related issues. The subject of human rights has risen rapidly on the oil and gas industry agenda. Recognising the importance of this issue, IPIECA members continually reassess human rights impacts, tools and issues. One of the responses has been the development of the Human Rights Training Toolkit, and the ongoing Human Rights Workshop series.
Social Impacts
Social Investment (SI) programs are defined as the voluntary contributions companies make to the communities and broader societies where they operate, with the objective of benefiting external stakeholders, typically through the transfer of skills or resources. IPIECA has created a Guidance to Creating Successful, Sustainable Social Investment Programs to assist companies in improving or developing their social investment policies and programs.
Social Investment
Oil and gas companies have accumulated considerable experience of working in areas of conflict. However, basic knowledge of and training in conflict risk and conflict management is not always readily available to company personnel. IPIECA members have worked to develop a guide to assist managers in carrying out risk assessment and risk management activities in situations where there is potential or existing conflict on varied levels.
Operating in Areas of Conflict
Potential social impacts of an oil and gas project can be both positive and negative. Adverse impacts such as resource use and the movement of people are often well publicized. However these are often balanced by positive impacts such as the promotion of employment, socio-economic development and improvements in infrastructure. IPIECA activities addressed under “social impacts” include providing a short guide to Social Impact Assessments (SIAs) and a look at the “resource curse”.
Other Activities
There are many issues that are on the SRWG’s radar, and that the working group has discussed or will be working on in the future. A few of these include transparency and water issues. Further topics will be forthcoming.
