About Us
The International Petroleum Industry Environmental Conservation Association (IPIECA) was established in 1974 following the establishment of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). IPIECA provides one of the industry’s principal channels of communication with the United Nations.
IPIECA is the single global association representing both the upstream and downstream oil and gas industry on key global environmental and social issues. IPIECA’s programme takes full account of international developments in these issues, serving as a forum for discussion and cooperation involving industry and international organisations.
IPIECA aims to develop and promote scientifically-sound, cost-effective, practical, socially and economically acceptable solutions to global environmental and social issues pertaining to the oil and gas industry. IPIECA is not a lobbying organisation, but provides a forum for encouraging continuous improvement of industry performance.

law related to environmental and social issues and ethical business

social issues
- Develop, share and promote implementation of sound practices and
solutions with others in industry
- Engage with stakeholders, taking into account their expectations,
concerns, ideas and views, and work with government and nongovernment
organisations

IPIECA and its members recognise that this Vision, Mission and Membership Commitment are steps on a journey of
performance improvement reflecting evolving societal expectations, new knowledge and emerging issues.

Governance
IPIECA draws on the skills and experiences of its international membership through various committees, supported by a small secretariat. IPIECA currently has a number of Working Groups and Task Forces, comprising: Climate Change; Biodiversity; Social Responsibility; Oil Spill; Operational, Fuels & Product Issues; Health and Sustainability Reporting.
The IPIECA Strategic Issues Assessment Forum (SIAF) provides early warning of emerging issues and develops considered responses.
Major policy decisions, yearly programmes and budgets are agreed by the IPIECA General Committee. This Committee is formed by representatives of all companies and association members who come together at the Annual General Meeting. An Executive Committee coordinates and prioritises core activities according to the policies and guidelines laid down by the General Committee.
