Collaboration makes success of the first regional workshop on security and human rights
27 Jul 2012
In collaboration with ICMM, IFC, International Alert and the Voluntary Principles Corporate Pillar, IPIECA organised a regional workshop on implementing the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights (VPs) in Peru from 10-11 July 2012. The workshop was attended by IPIECA and ICMM members, as well as other extractives companies in the region. Participants with little exposure to the VPs benefited from good overview of how the VP are intended to be used, while more experienced participants were able to discuss and share experience on how they are applied in the region.
Alongside the workshop, the Swiss Embassy hosted an evening reception for Peruvian government officials, the embassies of the VP Government Pillar, human rights NGOs and workshop participants, to promote and raise the profile of the Voluntary Principles in Peru. Roper Cleland, IPIECA Social Responsibility Project Manager, spoke to attendees on the development of the Implementation Guidance Tools for the VPs and the workshop, stressing the importance of the collaborative working to the success of these implementation initiatives.
Two further workshops will be held during 2012; in October in Cape Town and in December in Indonesia.
