The 19th session of the UN Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD 19) convened from 2-14 May 2011, at UN Headquarters in New York. The CSD meets annually, in two-year cycles, with each cycle focusing on clusters of specific thematic and cross-sectoral issues. The five thematic areas for CSD 19 were Transport, Chemicals, Waste Management, Mining and The 10 Year Framework of Sustainable Consumption and Production (10YFP).
CSD 19 was significant for two reasons:
- It covered a key set of themes in relation to the sustainable development agenda, especially the 10YFP
- It was the last session before Rio+20, where important decisions are expected on the institutional framework for sustainable
After two weeks of negotiations a Chair’s text was proposed for adoption as a package, but no consensus could be reached. After failing to agree to convene a resumed session in June, CSD 19 adjourned having failed to adopt an agreed outcome containing policy recommendations on its thematic cluster.
