This year’s International Day for Biological Diversity 2016 theme is ‘Mainstreaming Biodiversity; Sustaining People and their Livelihoods’.
The concept of ‘mainstreaming biodiversity’ is central to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and will also be discussed in the Thirteenth meeting of the Conference of Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), which will be held in December. Interested parties are encouraged to identify the ways in which biodiversity supports livelihoods as part of the celebration.

IPIECA monitors and tracks emerging issues and external trends; the UN Environment Programme and the UN-CBD provides a useful forum for the scanning of existing and emerging Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (BES) related issues. Please visit the IPIECA website for more information on our work in the area of BES, including our newly launched Biodiversity and ecosystem services fundamentals: Guidance document for the oil and gas sector, to aid in responsible BES issue management.
Please raise awareness of International Day for Biological Diversity and this important topic across your organization.
