Insights and Ipieca activity from the sixth session of UN Environment Assembly.

The UN Environment Assembly is the world’s highest-level decision-making body on the environment. It addresses the critical environmental challenges facing the world today.

Over 5,500 delegates came together at UNEA-6 (26 February – 1 March, Nairobi) around the theme of Effective, inclusive and sustainable multilateral actions to tackle climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution.

A series of leadership and multi-stakeholder dialogues and more than 30 official side events and associated events took place.

Ipieca on-site activity

Ipieca was represented on-site by representatives of two member companies.

Ipieca official UNEA-6 virtual side event

Ipieca co-hosted an official virtual side event with Fauna & Flora, IUCN, ICMM and EBRD on ‘Ensuring that the energy transition contributes to a nature and people positive planet’. Ipieca was represented by BES Working Group Chair Steven Dickinson (TotalEnergies).

BIMG beacon projects report 2024 launch

During UNEA-6, the UNEP Business and Industry Major Group (BIMG) launched the BIMG beacon projects report 2024. It showcases 35 successful projects by BIMG members which contribute positively to tackling global challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution, including two from Ipieca:

Addressing the interconnected global crises
Immediate action and transformative changes are required to make positive contributions to climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution.

Nature-based solutions
Nature-based solutions were mentioned during many side events as being key to tackling climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution in a holistic way with recommendations shared with governments on good practices, standards, finance and capacity building.

Policy intervention is a powerful tool to translate words into actions
Concrete policies are required to meet the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Effective, inclusive collaboration
Multilateral Environmental Agreements can be used as a tool to foster effective, inclusive collaborations between all stakeholders including Indigenous Peoples, local communities, governments, businesses and NGOs.
