Gabriella Herzog (Hess, IPIECA Social Responsibility Working Group Chair) participated in a panel on behalf of IPIECA organised by the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) at the 2015 IFC Sustainability Exchange, which took place from 20-21 May in Washington, D.C., USA.
The panel was titled Human rights due diligence: integrating human rights into Environmental and Social Impact Assessments (ESIAs), and explored some of the challenges companies and service providers face in this area and potential ways of overcoming them.
Gabriella spoke about the IPIECA and Danish Institute for Human Rights guidance for the oil and gas industry: Integrating human rights into environmental, social and health impact assessments, published in December 2013. The guidance was developed to help companies meet the expectations outlined in the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights to respect human rights by conducting due diligence, and combines the knowledge of human rights experts and impact assessment practitioners.
The IFC's 9th Annual IFC Sustainability Exchange was titled: Navigating Market Cycles: Shifting Gears, Strengthening Fundamentals and Sharing Benefits. The event brought together over 200 global practitioners from companies, consultancies, NGOs, the public sector, international development agencies, academia and the World Bank Group to jointly explore economic, environmental and social challenges and opportunities faced by infrastructure and natural resource actors.
