There was significant interest in the new IPIECA onshore Water Management Framework at its launch alongside World Water Week on 3 September in Stockholm. Over 100 delegates attended a special launch event where the framework was positively received, however, it was clear from the discussion that there is a drive for the oil and gas industry to be doing more to reduce its water use and impacts. The event was featured in the World Water Week Daily, the official newspaper of the event.
IPIECA held a small dialogue session following the launch of the framework to seek initial impressions from key stakeholders as well as their expectations of the industry in implementing it. Stakeholders were impressed that the sector has developed a framework and appreciated the opportunity to provide their input, however more action was encouraged; IPIECA intends to maintain the dialogue moving forward.
IPIECA will continue to promote use and uptake of the framework widely throughout the industry as well as continue work on upcoming good practice guides on identifying and assessing water sources (onshore) and water use activities and efficiency (upstream and onshore). World Water Week 2014, for which the theme will be “Water and Energy”, will provide an opportunity for the industry to illustrate progress in this area.
