IPIECA attended World Water Week in Stockholm, Sweden for the fifth year running to continue the dialogue with key stakeholders and share progress in the area of water management for the oil and gas industry. This year’s theme Water for Sustainable Growth, provided an interesting framework for discussions throughout the week, with a wide variety of side events and presentations.
During the week, it was noted that water plays an important role in all 17 of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, making it a highly interlinked, valuable and somewhat complex resource to manage sustainably. Collaboration and partnerships were emphasised as a way of overcoming future water risks and attendees were encouraged to seek opportunities to learn from others where possible.
IPIECA held a side event A vision for water in the oil and gas sector outlining the recent project working to develop a long term vision to 2030 to understand the relationship between the oil and gas industry and water management. Around 30 attendees representing NGOs, academia, consultants and the business community participated and provided useful insight for IPIECA to consider.
IPIECA continues to see World Water Week as a key forum for stakeholder engagement and to build awareness of the upcoming issues and emerging topics around water management for the oil and gas industry.
