Today is World Water Day, an annual UN event to focus attention on the importance of freshwater and promote the sustainable management of freshwater resources. This year’s theme is wastewater.
Water is a finite resource, and both water quality and quantity are becoming a global environmental concern. A huge majority of wastewater, from multiple users, flows back into the environment untreated, where it may cause environmental damage. This can be combatted by water recycling and re-use strategies, as well as treatment options. Water is used throughout the oil and gas project lifecycle, as such IPIECA develops tools and guidance to identify water risks and effectively manage water resources.
In line with this year’s theme, IPIECA has begun work on water re-use, with a particular focus on the re-use of produced water. Produced water from oil and gas operations is increasingly being seen as a resource and IPIECA is aiming to understand the potential for and the opportunities and constraints related to produced water re-use.
