Urban encroachment

October 2009

This guide has been developed to assist members of IPIECA and their stakeholders to better understand and manage the risks associated with the social, political, environmental and economic impact of growing (encroaching) urban populations. As urban centres grow, the pressures increase on pre-existing industrial facilities to reduce their environmental footprint or relocate altogether. The implications of urban encroachment bring with it added costs, increased risks and often unwanted public exposure.
