Community and public health

Community and public health concerns the organized efforts of society to prevent disease, prolong life and promote good health.

In the past, community health outreach programmes and assessments have often taken place on a voluntary basis. In some cases, for example HIV/AIDS management, it is helpful to consider community and workplace together as one environment. Oil and gas companies understand the need to consider the potential public health impact of their activities and projects on host societies in order to understand and address their responsibilities appropriately.

Health impact assessment

Health impact assessment (HIA) is a useful tool for business, communities and government policy makers. Experience within the oil and gas industry suggests that health is a critical issue to both the project workforce and the surrounding communities. The oil and gas industry faces a complex agenda that increasingly requires an evaluation of health, social and environmental impacts throughout all of its operations. The OGP-IPIECA Health Committee produced a guide to the HIA process, including an overview of the latest thinking and practice.

HIV/AIDS management

The Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), which leads to Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS), has become one of the most serious public health challenges of modern times. Its increasing prevalence – especially in developing countries – debilitates communities and disrupts normal commercial activity. Employers need to manage this growing business issue carefully and responsibly, in a way that maximizes the protection afforded to employees and the surrounding communities, and minimizes the impact on oil and gas industry operations. The OGP-IPIECA Health Committee produced a guidance document intended to provide resources for oil and gas industry professionals tasked with formulating policy and implementing best practices across their organizations in response to HIV/AIDS.

Malaria management

Malaria is endemic in many areas where the oil and gas industry operates. The OGP-IPIECA Health Committee has produced a guide describing the science and value of Malaria Management Programmes (MMPs). The guide also provides checklists, audit protocols and other templates to support the implementation of MMPs in the oil and gas industry.
