Listening, not lobbying
As a non-lobby, non-governmental organization (NGO) Ipieca does not take part in the negotiations at COP events. We are there just to listen.
In line with Ipieca’s strict non-lobby approach and our UNFCCC NGO observer status, Ipieca representatives at COP events do not, and indeed cannot, take part in the negotiations, which are only open to participation by government and national representatives.
Raising awareness and support for COP outcomes
Having attended COP events, listened to the topics under discussion and the resolutions agreed upon, we then share these our members and raise support for them across the wider industry.
Aligning Ipieca guidance with COP objectives
We also embed these objectives into our guidance and tools, which are developed by members and then shared and used widely across the industry, helping to contribute to the COP objectives and deliver on the Paris Agreement.
Providing industry technical inputs to support successful COP events
As an organization focused on sustainability issues, which convenes a significant amount of industry experts, Ipieca is often asked by UNFCCC subsidiaries to provide industry technical inputs to their work and participate in pre-COP events and workshops.
This pre-COP work is crucial to the success of COP events as it provides the scientific and technical knowledge the negotiators need to make informed and ambitious decisions during COP events.
Ahead of COP28, Ipieca provided input to the technical component of the UNFCCC’s Global Stocktake. This element of the Global Stocktake explored how gaps in the implementation of the Paris Agreement can be bridged, with a focus on technology, emissions mitigation, capacity building and cross-sector collaboration.
Hosting and participating in events to enhance ambition and drive action
While on site at COP events, Ipieca hosts its own events and workshops to support the topics under discussion and promote cross-sector collaboration and solutions. We also take part in events and engagements held by other organizations providing industry insights and sharing good practice.
Bringing sustainability experts to COP
The Ipieca delegation usually consists of representatives from our own secretariat as well as a limited number of subject matter experts from our members.
All Ipieca delegates comply with the code of conduct for UNFCCC events (more details on the UNFCCC website) and support the Ipieca Principles, Ipieca’s condition of membership, whose first principle is to support the Paris Agreement and its aims.
As a non-governmental organization (NGO), and in line with Ipieca’s non-lobby status, Ipieca representatives at COP events listen to, but do not take part in negotiations, or engage in any lobby activity related to climate or any other topic.
