As a non-lobby organization with UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) observer status, Ipieca has attended every UNFCCC COP event since the first one in 1995.

As part of the Ipieca Principles, one of the conditions of Ipieca membership is the support of the Paris Agreement.

Ipieca’s role at UNFCCC COPs is to listen to negotiations, feedback the outcomes to our members and integrate them into our workstreams and guidance. Ipieca also organizes its own on-site events and participates in other organizations’ events focused on driving cross-sector action to support a net-zero future.

When requested, Ipieca takes part in pre-COP technical consultations, workshops and meetings. These provide the scientific and technical knowledge that governments at COP events need to make informed, ambitious decisions.

The Ipieca delegation usually consists of representatives from our secretariat as well as a limited number of subject matter experts from our members. This is a real value add to stakeholders attending from UN, IGO and NGO organizations: Ipieca provides the opportunity to engage with leading industry sustainability experts, accelerating action or facilitating insights from the industry. In line with Ipieca’s non-lobby status, Ipieca representatives at COP events listen to, but do not take part in negotiations, or engage in any lobby activity related to climate or any other topic.
