A once-every-four-years gathering of nature conservation experts, leaders and decision-makers from around the world.

The IUCN World Conservation Congress is where the world comes together to set priorities and drive conservation and sustainable development action.

The congress has three components:

Forum

The forum is the largest knowledge marketplace for conservation and sustainable development science, practice and innovation. Through thematic sessions, the Forum addresses the economic, social, scientific and technical aspects of a broad range of nature conservation issues.

Exhibition

In the Exhibition, IUCN members and commissions, businesses, partners, and academia host pavilions, booths and events. The exhibition is open to both Congress participants and the public, allowing exhibitors to showcase their research, innovations and work to the broadest Congress audience.

Members' Assembly

The Members' Assembly is IUCN's highest decision-making body. During the Assembly, IUCN's Member organisations vote on pressing conservation and sustainable development issues. These decisions influence global policy and set the conservation agenda for years to come.

IUCN and Ipieca

In April 2021, Ipieca signed a memorandum of understanding with the IUCN with the objective of advancing oil, gas and alternative energy environmental performance in the area of biodiversity conservation and activities that accelerate the transition to a low-carbon energy future.

In 2024, Ipieca and IUCN collaborated with Fauna & Flora on an official side event at COP16 titled ‘Integrating Indigenous Peoples and local communities in biodiversity conservation within oil, gas and alternative energy’. At the sixth session of the UN Environment Assembly, Ipieca and IUCN co-hosted an official side event along with the International Council on Mining and Metals, Fauna & Flora and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development on ‘Ensuring that the energy transition contributes to a nature and people positive planet’. IUCN also facilitated the fifth Ipieca biodiversity and ecosystem services peer-to-peer workshop hosted by ADNOC in Abu Dhabi.

Ipieca and IUCN are currently collaborating on a compendium to raise awareness, provide guidance and examples of co-use opportunities which optimise the overall productivity of areas supporting wind and solar developments, enhancing outcomes for climate, nature and people.
