  • Webinar: World Bank's GGFR - global gas flaring estimates for 2022
Calendar16 May 2023, 3:00pm - 4:00pm

Associated natural gas is often flared (burned) during oil production, routinely or as the result of an unscheduled event. Gas flaring is a significant source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from upstream operations. Successful flare reduction helps conserve a valuable natural resource that could be used for productive purposes, such as generating power, and can help lower emissions.

Ipieca is pleased to host a webinar on the recently launched World Bank’s Global Gas Flaring Reduction Partnership (GGFR) 2023 Global Gas Flaring Tracker Report. The latest report highlights a decrease in the volumes flared of 5 billion cubic meters (bcm) since 2021. According to the GGFR, this reduction could be compared to removing three million cars from the road.

During the webinar, Zubin Bamji and Debbie Walker from the GGFR will provide insights and key takeaways from the report. This year, the report explores the global perspective, highlighting efforts and opportunities to reduce flaring in different countries. In addition, the 2023 tracker report has incorporated a section on ‘Flaring and methane: the ongoing challenge’.

Presenter biographies

Zubin Bamji is Programme Manager of the World Bank’s GGFR Partnership and Trust Fund. He leads a team focused on identifying solutions to the many technical, regulatory, policy, and financial barriers to flaring reduction by helping develop country-specific programmes, conducting research, sharing best practices, raising awareness, increasing the global commitments to end routine flaring, and advancing flare measurements and reporting.

Debbie Walker is a Technical Advisor supporting the GGFR team with the interpretation of global satellite observations of flaring, leading the preparation of the annual Global Gas Flaring Tracker Report, supporting the Zero Routine Flaring by 2030 initiative, and providing technical support on oil and gas decarbonization opportunities.

About the World Bank's GGFR

The GGFR is a multi-donor trust fund composed of governments, oil companies, and multilateral organizations committed to ending routine gas flaring at oil production sites across the world.
