  • Floating wind turbines

    CNOOC has deployed a revolutionary deep-water floating wind power on the Guanlan platform, located in the South China Sea, aiming to supply green power to its offshore oil and gas production facilities, constituting a significant move towards renewable energy adoption and emissions reduction in their operations.

    The innovative floating structure is equipped with a 7.25-megawatt typhoon-proof turbine and utilises advanced technology, including a spread mooring system and online tensioner, to ensure operational stability even under extreme weather conditions. After the project is put into operation, the electricity generated by the turbine will be connected to the power grid of the offshore oilfield group. With an annual power generation capacity of 22 million kilowatt hours, the project will cut carbon dioxide emissions by 22,000 tonnes per year.

    This pioneering initiative underscores CNOOC's commitment to diversifying its energy portfolio and transitioning towards sustainable practices, marking a notable milestone in China's offshore wind energy sector.

  • Renewable power for offshore oil and gas

    Equinor, OMV, and INPEX Idemitsu are working collaboratively with other partners in the development of the Hywind Tampen offshore wind farm in the Norwegian North Sea off the coast of Florø.

    The wind farm will consist of 11 wind turbines based on the Hywind technology developed by Equinor. The turbines will have a total capacity of 88 megawatts, capable of meeting about 35% of the annual power demand of the five Snorre A and B, Gullfaks A, B and C platforms.

    By reducing the use of gas turbines on the fields the project helps to cut CO2 emissions by more than 200,000 tonnes per year, equivalent to the annual emissions from 100,000 cars.

  • Reducing offshore carbon footprint by up to 50%

    The supply of clean grid power will reduce the carbon footprint of ADNOC’s offshore upstream operations by up to 50%.

    In 2022, ADNOC announced a USD 3.8 billion, first-of-its-kind, sub-sea transmission network in the Middle East and North Africa region to connect ADNOC’s offshore operations to TAQA’s clean onshore power network, unlocking cost-savings and environmental benefits. This project will reduce ADNOC’s offshore carbon footprint by up to 50%, and further support the UAE ‘Net Zero by 2050 Strategic Initiative’.

    Clean grid power will be sent to offshore locations via subsea cables. From these offshore islands power will be distributed to other offshore installations. This clean power will replace electricity currently generated from gas turbine generators. The project, which represents a number of industry firsts, is currently being executed with commercial operation commencing in 2025.

  • Solar powered oil field

    The S1 Solar Power Project was initiated with the objective to replace natural gas with solar power for electricity generation in the petroleum production process at the Sirikit oil field. The project has an electrical capacity of 9.98 MW, aiming to replace electricity generated by the gas turbine generators for approximately 9% of the electricity demand in the Sirikit oil field.

    Through the S1 Solar Power Project, PTTEP will be able to reduce natural gas consumption for electricity generation and prolong production at the Sirikit oil field at approximately 0.4 million cubic feet per day. A preliminarily evaluation of the reduction of cumulative GHG emissions assessed that it was equal to 94,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent throughout the concession period.
