Ipieca and its members are committed to supporting the aims of the UNCBD, the governing body of COP17.

Two of the eight Ipieca Principles, stating what Ipieca and its members stand for, are aimed at driving support for the UNCBD:

  • Support the aims of the UN Convention for Biological Diversity
  • Responsibly manage operational impacts on the natural environment and ecosystem services

Underpinned by the UNCBD, Ipieca works to integrate BES management across the life cycle of oil, gas and alternative energy operations, using a risk-based approach that embeds BES considerations into operational practices and management systems. Ipieca supported the development of the GBF adopted at COP15, providing industry technical feedback on a draft version on making the GBF relevant to the industry and as ambitious as possible. Ipieca also contributed to the Long Term Approach for Mainstreaming Biodiversity framework with several Ipieca guides being referenced throughout the document.

Ipieca works to raise awareness and support for the GBF, providing good practice guidance to support its implementation across the oil, gas and alternative energy sector.
