Ipieca and its members are committed to supporting the Paris Agreement and its aims.

The Ipieca Principles

The Ipieca Principles outline a shared ambition in support of Ipieca’s vision. They set a sustainability framework and reinforce Ipieca’s role to inspire action and lead the global oil, gas and alternative energy industry through a sustainable energy transition.

The first principle under each theme provides support for a United Nations convention or initiative. The second principle under each theme is operational.

The first two of the eight Ipieca Principles are:

  1. Support the Paris Agreement and its aims
  2. Advance emissions reduction and innovation and enable adoption of low-carbon products and solutions across oil, gas and/or alternative energy

Ipieca works to address climate change

The Ipieca Climate Change Group was established in 1988. Since then, Ipieca has developed and shared good practice guidance and tools to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, enhance energy efficiency, report on climate related risks and opportunities, and support the sustainable scale up of energy transition solutions.

Good practice guidance and resources to drive a just transition

Ipieca develops and shares practical guidance to reduce GHG emissions across the production, refining and transportation of oil and gas, supporting the industry to be part of a net-zero future by producing the energy the world needs responsibly and with less emissions.

Our resources and capacity building cover the following topics:

  • Reducing operational emissions
  • Energy efficiency
  • Raising awareness and support for lower emissions pathways and solutions initiatives
  • Climate data and reporting
  • Cleaner fuels and products
  • Net-zero emissions

The briefing highlights the role of oil and gas in supporting a just transition, the regional complexities of a net-zero future and the need for collaboration to scale up energy transition enablers.

The brief highlights that of the multiple science-based pathways to net-zero, those that also achieve the ambitions of UN Sustainable Development Goals, such as prosperity and energy access for all, require all energy sources, including oil and gas, for the foreseeable future.

Paris+10

2025 marked the 10th anniversary of the adoption of the Paris Agreement. In the decade that has followed, Ipieca and its members have continued to contribute to COP events and UN conventions, developing and sharing resources and tools to support delivery of the Paris Agreement goals, and raising awareness of initiatives and technologies towards a net-zero future that cares for nature and leaves no one behind.

Ipieca member action

Ipieca members support the Paris Agreement’s aims and the journey to a net-zero future by pursuing efforts to limit the temperature increase to well below 2 °C above pre-industrial levels, and pursuing efforts to limit it to 1.5 °C.

They are reducing GHG emissions from their operations through enhancing energy efficiency, flare reduction and managing methane emissions, as well as increasingly powering their operations with low-carbon or renewable energy sources. They are also helping their consumers reduce their emissions through the increased use of gas, enhanced efficiencies in engine-fuel systems, and developing low-carbon mobility technologies.

Because of its infrastructure, expertise, capacity for innovation and ability to attract investment in large-scale projects, the oil and gas industry has an important role to play in the transition to net-zero emissions. Ipieca members are already involved in carbon capture and storage, hydrogen, biofuels, wind and solar, with significant capital investment commitments to grow their low-carbon businesses.
