Biodiversity is the foundation of all life on Earth. But around the world, it is being lost at an unprecedented rate. The International Day for Biological Diversity 2026, ‘Acting locally for global impact,’ is a call to take action to halt and reverse biodiversity loss.
How Ipieca supports the energy industry to protect nature
Ipieca brings together members and stakeholders to share knowledge and develop guidance and tools to protect the natural environment, minimise and mitigate risks and impacts from operations and products, and contribute positively to nature.
Support for the UN Convention for Biological Diversity (UNCBD) is one of the eight Ipieca Principles, a condition of membership. We have had UNCBD observer status since 1994 and provided industry technical feedback to support the development of the Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF).
Aligned with this year’s three campaign pillars of: look and learn; connect and act; and share, Ipieca is sharing good practice guidance to enable energy companies to act on biodiversity and examples of positive change to inspire industry action.
Select Ipieca guidance on biodiversity
Given our close involvement in drafting the GBF, Ipieca is well positioned to share knowledge and produce the guidance companies need to contribute to the GBF (click on the cover images to explore these guidance).

Ipieca member action to protect and enhance biodiversity
- All Ipieca members support the UN Convention on Biodiversity
- All Ipieca members work to manage operational impacts on the natural environment and ecosystem services
- 6 BES peer-to-peer workshops in Africa, Asia Pacific and the Middle East
- 96% of Ipieca members avoid or work to conserve and respect sensitive and/or legally designated protected areas
- 60% of Ipieca members integrate the mitigation hierarchy into their environmental practices
* Based on desktop research conducted on member companies from July-September 2024
Click on the links below to see examples of how Ipieca members are acting to protect and enhance biodiversity through:
- Conserving, enhancing and restoring high carbon stock ecosystems
- Responsible water management across the value chain
- Protecting and enhancing nature
- Enhancing marine spill preparedness and response
The oil, gas and alternative energy industry can serve as an essential partner in supporting governments to achieve the GBF targets. Download this document for examples of how Ipieca companies are taking ambitious biodiversity actions which contribute towards the goals of the GBF.
