About International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples 2025

This year’s theme is ‘Indigenous Peoples and AI: defending rights, shaping futures’. It explores how artificial intelligence can support Indigenous communities by preserving languages, documenting oral histories, mapping traditional lands and enhancing climate resilience. Crucially, it emphasises that these benefits can only be realised when Indigenous Peoples are meaningfully involved in the design, governance and implementation of AI technologies.

Human rights are central to Ipieca’s mission. This is reflected in the Ipieca Principles on people, which include:

  • Support the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights

  • Promote the health, wellbeing and social inclusion of workforces and local communities relating to operations, and contribute to the social and economic development of host communities and countries

The Ipieca Principles, a condition of membership, are grouped around our four strategic pillars of climate, nature, people and sustainability, with two in each area.
