Air pollution is an environmental health risk. It also exacerbates climate change, causes economic losses, and reduces agricultural productivity and knows no borders. By collaborating across borders, sectors and silos, we can reduce air pollution. This International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies, the UN calls upon everyone to ‘Race for Clean Air’.

Supporting the UNEP-Partnership for Clean Fuels and Vehicles

Ipieca is a founding member of the United Nations Environment Programme's (UNEP) Partnership for Clean Fuels and Vehicles (PCFV), which focuses on air quality improvements through improved vehicle emissions standards and associated fuels.

Working with over 70 organisations for almost two decades, this powerful collaboration eliminated leaded petrol use from 82 countries, with the final phase-out in the last remaining country occurring in mid-2021 marking the end of the use of leaded petrol worldwide.

Ipieca is currently supporting UNEP-PCFV with its Euro 4 fuels standards campaign, coordinating the downstream industry’s contribution.

Contributing to IMO’s work on decarbonising shipping

We have long been an International Maritime Organization (IMO) observer and partner with the IMO on a range on initiatives. Our current focus is on supporting its analysis of life cycle greenhouse gas emissions of shipping fuels and the development of alternative lower-carbon shipping fuels. In 2025 Ipieca provided technical inputs to the IMO Net-Zero Framework.

Scaling up sustainable aviation with ICAO

Ipieca’s role is to provide the International Civil Aviation Organization

(ICAO) with technical inputs on life cycle analysis of aviation fuels, including their processing, as well as analysing other sustainability criteria, including human rights, biodiversity, resources availability and supply chain issues related to their development.

Ipieca guidance to support cleaner air

Ipieca works with its members to share knowledge and develop good practice to enable the industry to produce and supply cleaner, better performing fuels.

Presents an overview of: the role of Ipieca in advancing environmental and social performance of the oil and gas industry; Ipieca’s role in driving sectoral decarbonisation; Ipieca’s input to the IMO.
