In 2017, the Methane Guiding Principles (MGP) initiative was launched, establishing five key principles for companies to adopt in their effort to mitigate methane emissions. The initiative rapidly gained momentum, expanding from 8 founding members to over 50 companies and organisations – including Ipieca and 13 of its member companies - highlighting its support within the industry.
In 2025, the initiative was officially retired, as it achieved its original intent of supporting an industry focus on methane reduction.
IOGP now hosts and maintains MGP publications, which are freely accessible at IOGP’s online publications library. The MGP publications, available in various languages, cover topics including:
- Venting
- Flaring
- Equipment leaks
- Identification, detection, measurement and quantification
- Transmission, storage, liquefied natural gas terminals and distribution
A forum bringing together businesses and organisations from across civil society, academia and industry, the MGP not only raised the profile of methane emissions reduction, driving industry-wide action, but also led to impactful action – through best practice development and dissemination, and capacity building.
