Calendar2 December 2025

Two years on from Ipieca’s first water peer-to-peer workshop in Paris, 2023, water specialists from across the industry convened in Doha, Qatar, for the second water peer-to-peer workshop, hosted by Qatar Shell.

The 2025 workshop covered the latest thinking, good practices and trends on water management and stewardship in the oil, gas and alternative energy industry, and was open to participants from all energy companies, not just Ipieca members.

The workshop was structured around Ipieca’s Water management framework. Individual workshop modules were presented by water experts from Ipieca companies, including ConocoPhillips, Eni, ExxonMobil, Qatar Petrochemical Company, Shell and SLB. Other member companies in attendance, such as Qatar Energy, Qatar Energy LNG and Aramco, presented case studies on their latest water achievements and challenges; this prompted engaging discussions around the lessons learned.

The 2025 water peer-to peer-workshop was attended by over 60 participants representing 14 oil and gas companies. International participants attended from Europe, Asia, Africa and North America, bringing diverse perspectives and experiences to the workshop.

Hear from our participants

The second Ipieca water peer-to-peer workshop has been a great success, and I would like to offer sincere thanks to Ipieca on behalf of Qatar Shell for recognising the importance of hosting this workshop in Qatar – it truly couldn’t have been in a more fitting location.

The workshop’s unique format, combining modules, theoretical discussions, and practical case studies, provide a rare opportunity for cross-pollination of real-world solutions. One of the highlights was the exchange of real case studies, which sparked meaningful discussions and practical insights.

I strongly believe this workshop should continue in the coming years, and I look forward to personally participating and staying actively engaged with the Ipieca Water Working Group.

Sabah Solim, Research and Innovation Programme Manager at Qatar Shell, & Chair of Ipieca’s Water Peer-to-Peer Task Force

The peer-to-peer workshop proved once again to be a unique opportunity to bring together different worlds, united by a vital resource like water. We all benefited from the mutual exchange of knowledge and perspectives among colleagues who hold different roles in their companies and face a wide variety of environmental challenges.

Alessandro Nardella, Senior Advisor for Water at Eni

The peer-to-peer learning event was an excellent opportunity to gain insights from the Water Working Group. The event fostered valuable networking and fruitful discussions among members, reinforcing the importance of collaboration to advance industry practices.

Mashael Al-Maas – Engineer at ConocoPhillips Global Water Sustainability Centre

This was my first participation in the peer-to-peer learning event, I found it to be an invaluable opportunity to strengthen our professional networks, exchange best practices, and engage in knowledge-sharing through case studies and structured learning modules. The collaborative atmosphere fostered open dialogue on the common challenges we face in water management within the oil and gas industry, while promoting water stewardship and brainstorming innovative solutions. I look forward to participating in the next water peer-to-peer workshop to continue building on these insights.

Suhur Saeed, Water Management Lead at ExxonMobil Research Qatar

In the heart of a water scarce region, we experienced phenomenal collaborative learning and sharing of stewardship best practices. The forum was unique in that it fostered connections between employees from companies that would normally not engage with each other, yet are all impacted by similar water limitations and opportunities. This is the 'ground one' water workshop for building your knowledge base, networking, and progressing the industry toward harmony with the natural water cycle.

Jesse Farrell, Principal Carbon Capture Engineer and Water Stewardship Strategist at SLB

The Qatar Science & Technology Park (QSTP) provided an excellent venue for the workshop. QSTP is home to several international oil and gas companies, including Shell, ConocoPhillips and ExxonMobil. Workshop participants were able to tour the laboratories of ExxonMobil Research Qatar, ConocoPhillips Qatar, and the pilot site of Qatar Shell, learning about the ongoing research, innovation and development at these world-class facilities.

The workshop concluded with a field trip to Ras Laffan Industrial City, which is the largest liquified natural gas (LNG) production facility in the world. The field trip included a tour of the site, and a visit of the process water treatment facilities, operated jointly by Qatar Energy LNG and Qatar Shell.

The 2025 water peer-to-peer workshop brought together 60 water professionals in the oil and gas industry.
