Hosted by UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Netherlands government, this meeting was aimed at finding ways to support Africa to adopt low sulphur fuels, in line with the UNEP hosted Partnership for Clean Fuels and Vehicles (PCFV) focus to reduce sulphur in petrol and diesel fuel to 50 parts per million (ppm) and below in the Global South. With an increasing vehicle population to meet rising mobility needs in the continent, many African cities are recording poor air quality.

The 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) provide a common global framework for navigating the world's most urgent economic, social, and environmental challenges. While governments have the primary responsibility to prioritize, coordinate and implement efforts to meet the SDGs, there is wide recognition that the private sector and civil society will play critical roles in the implementation of national plans.

On Wednesday 20 September, Ipieca co-hosted an event with UNDP, IFC, and ICMM - The Oil, Gas and Mining Industries and the 2030 Agenda: Partnerships and Participation to Accelerate Progress. The event was held alongside the 72nd Regular Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

This quarter Ipieca attended the UNCBD Regional Africa Business & Biodiversity Forum and the IMO technical seminar on marine biofuels. We also raised awareness of the UN World Water Day, as well publishing two resources aligned with UN conventions and initiatives.

This quarter Ipieca attended the Bonn Climate Conference, supporting preparations for COP30 and provided technical input to the IMO’s Marine Environment Protection Committee meeting. We also raised awareness of the UN Ocean Conference and various UN International Days, as well publishing five resources aligned with UN conventions and initiatives.

One of Ipieca’s core roles is to support UN conventions and agreements. We provide technical input when requested, raise awareness and support, and develop good practice guidance that enables the oil, gas and alternative energy industry to advance these global frameworks.

The week featured discussions on renewable energy, energy efficiency, cleaner electricity systems, resilient energy infrastructure, energy financing and the role of sustainable fuels in supporting the energy transition. Participants highlighted the importance of integrated approaches that strengthen energy security, affordability and sustainability while accelerating progress towards climate goals.

Ipieca supported and took part in the forum, which highlighted sector-specific solutions to accelerate biodiversity mainstreaming, inform COP17 outcomes and strengthen regional reporting and implementation of the Global Biodiversity Framework.
