Today is Human Rights Day, which is observed every year on this day, 10 December. It commemorates the day on which, in 1948, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
This year, Human Rights Day calls on everyone to stand up for someone's rights.
IPIECA has been working on human rights issues and raising awareness across the industry for over a decade. In anticipation of the endorsement of the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, in June 2011, IPIECA launched the Business and Human Rights Project. The project builds on the collective experience and practical know-how of our members in the area of business and human rights, enabling members to engage proactively in the human rights debate, as well as demonstrate strong and continued industry support for the UN Guiding Principles.
As a result, IPIECA has developed guidance covering due diligence, impact assessments, business relationships, grievance mechanisms, and responsible security and engagement with Indigenous Peoples. IPIECA continues to engage in discussions on topics related to the UN Guiding Principles as relevant to the oil and gas industry, and to share and promote dialogue and learning, demonstrate progress and raise awareness. IPIECA has participated and contributed to every UN Annual Forum on Business and Human Rights to date.
