Human Rights Day celebrates the date when the UN General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948. This year, Human Rights Day marks the beginning of a year-long campaign to commemorate the upcoming 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Ipieca has been working on human rights for over a decade, and our members support the framework provided by the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs), which provide a common language for human rights and a set of high-level principles for managing human rights issues and risks. Since the endorsement of the UNGPs in 2011, Ipieca has developed practical guidance on due diligence and community grievance mechanisms that have been widely used throughout the oil and gas industry.
To further demonstrate strong and continued industry support for the UNGPs, Ipieca is focusing the next phase of its work on respect for human rights in the supply chain, initially concentrating on the contracted workforce that the industry relies on to develop and operate its large-scale operations. This is an area of common saliency across the oil and gas industry, and one in which Ipieca members can benefit from peer learning and sharing of good practices, including from other industries and civil society-led initiatives.
