IMO meeting on preparedness and response to pollution incidents


IPIECA attended the 16th session of the Protocol on Preparedness, Response and Co-operation to Pollution Incidents by Hazardous and Noxious Substances (OPRC-HNS Protocol) Technical group meeting which took place at the IMO headquarters on the 28-31 January 2014. The IPIECA delegation included the Technical Director, the Oil Spill Response Project Manager, and the Project Manager of the Global Initiative for West, Central and Southern Africa.

During the meeting a number of manual and guidance documents were reviewed including the IMO dispersant guidelines, the guide on oil spill response in ice and snow conditions, guidance on the safe operation of oil pollution combating equipment, guidelines on international assistance and a revision of section II of the manual on oil pollution. The OPRC Model training courses were also reviewed. Rob Cox, IPIECA’s Technical Director provided an update on the Oil Spill Response - Joint Industry Project (JIP) as well as the OGP Arctic Technology Joint Industry Project (JIP). There was interest from the Norwegian Delegation in making connections with the Norwegian project looking at cooperation on marine oil pollution preparedness and response in the Arctic.
