Calendar31 October 2021

Today marks the official opening of COP26 in Glasgow, believed by many to be the most significant COP event since the landmark COP21 in Paris in 2015, when for the first time the world agreed to work together to limit global warming to well below 2 degrees, compared to pre-industrial levels, and aim for as close to 1.5 degrees as possible.

Ipieca's role

Ipieca has attended every single COP since the inaugural event, held in Berlin in 1995. As a non-lobby organization, Ipieca's role is to provide technical inputs and industry feedback on the issues under discussion.

During COP events we make use of our UNFCCC observer status to monitor the negotiations, and hold our own side events to support debate on relevant topics. We also take part in events held by governments and other organizations and host meetings in the conference side-lines. Once COP events are finished, we provide our members with briefings on the event and ensure the outcomes are reflected in our work programme.

Pre-COP26 activities

In the lead into COP26, Ipieca has organized and participated in several meetings, workshops and panels to raise awareness of the issues under discussion and how the industry can support these, as well as running events exploring cross-sector opportunities to accelerate pathways to net zero.
