About International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples 2024
The International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples takes place annually on 9 August to celebrate Indigenous Peoples and their knowledge. The theme this year is ‘Protecting the rights of Indigenous Peoples in voluntary isolation and initial contact’.
How Ipieca supports Indigenous Peoples
Ipieca provides global leadership on the interaction between the industry, people and communities by acting as a unique forum to promote high standards and share good practice.
The oil and gas industry and Indigenous Peoples have been increasingly coming into contact with each other over the past few decades.
Ipieca facilitates the sharing of member experiences on engaging with Indigenous Peoples. It has supported the industry to understand and implement the principles of free, prior, and informed consent (FPIC) and emerging good practices in relation to the oil and gas industry and its interaction with Indigenous People.

Ipieca Principles on people
Human rights are at the heart of what Ipieca does, with this commitment captured in the Ipieca Principles on people:
Support the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights
Promote the health, wellbeing and social inclusion of workforces and local communities relating to operations, and contribute to the social and economic development of host communities and countries
The Ipieca Principles, a condition of membership, are grouped around our four strategic pillars of climate, nature, people and sustainability, with two in each area.
