About the UN Biological Diversity Day 2024

22 May marks UN Biological Diversity Day.

In 2022, governments adopted the Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF), also known as the Biodiversity Plan, which sets goals and targets to stop and reverse nature loss by 2050.

This year, the theme is ‘Be part of the plan’. This is a call to action to encourage governments, Indigenous Peoples and local communities, non-governmental organizations, lawmakers, businesses and individuals to highlight the ways in which they are supporting the implementation of the Biodiversity Plan.

Ipieca and biodiversity

Ipieca and the GBF

Ipieca was actively involved in the UN CBD COP15 which resulted in the GBF, taking part in pre-COP workshops, the virtual first phase, providing industry technical feedback on the draft GBF and participating in COP15 in Montreal.

Supporting the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD)

Ipieca has had UN CBD observer status since 1994, and support for the UN CBD is one of eight Ipieca Principles.

We work to responsibly integrate the management of biodiversity and ecosystem services across the life cycle of operations. Our biodiversity guidance is underpinned by the UN CBD. Ipieca has also undertaken a mapping of all our guidance against each of the 23 GBF targets.

Collaboration to accelerate action

UN Environment Assembly (UNEA)

Ipieca engages in UNEA as an official observer contributing to discussions with governments, stakeholders from civil society, science and academia, and the private sector. Ipieca communicates to its members the key outcomes and resolutions from UNEA meetings. Ipieca co-hosted an official side event at UNEA-6 with Fauna & Flora, IUCN, ICMM and EBRD on ‘Ensuring that the energy transition contributes to a nature and people positive planet’.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)

Ipieca has a long-term relationship with IUCN. In 2021, Ipieca and IUCN signed an MoU with the objective to advance oil and gas companies’ environmental performance in the areas of biodiversity conservation and the transition to a lower carbon energy future.

UNEP-World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC)

Ipieca has a long-term relationship with UNEP-WCMC to better understand biodiversity issues and how the oil and gas industry can positively contribute. In 2023, UNEP-WCMC facilitated the Ipieca BES peer-to-peer workshop.

Cross Sector Biodiversity Initiative (CSBI)

A partnership between Ipieca, the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) and the Equator Principles Association to develop and share good practices related to biodiversity and ecosystem services in the extractive industries.

Biodiversity-related Ipieca guidance

Mapping the GBF targets against Ipieca publications (members only)

Ipieca conducted a mapping exercise exploring the links between the 23 GBF targets and Ipieca good practice guidance. The exercise demonstrated that there are several industry practices which contribute towards the GBF targets.

Guide to developing biodiversity action plans

Designed to help health safety environment/sustainable development (HSE/ SD) professionals - those involved in environmental management for project planning - to develop biodiversity action plans for their activities and projects in the oil, gas and alternative energy sector.

Natural climate solutions: high carbon stock ecosystems management

Provides six natural climate solutions management practices to support energy companies to conserve, enhance and restore the high carbon stock ecosystems in which they operate in order to deliver climate change mitigation outcomes that benefit also nature and people.

Managing biodiversity and ecosystem services across the energy transition: mainstreaming the mitigation hierarchy

Supports companies to mainstream the mitigation hierarchy (avoid, minimise, restore, offset) across projects and integrate it with other biodiversity and ecosystem services management practices.

Biodiversity and ecosystem services fundamentals

Sets out a framework to inform biodiversity and ecosystem services strategy development and decision making at the corporate level and at the key stages of an asset life cycle for any type of operation or environmental context.

SDG Roadmap

Impact opportunity 5: Biodiversity, land and water stewardship of the Ipieca-WBCSD SDG Roadmap includes 6 recommended actions for oil and gas companies to conserve, restore and promote biodiversity and ecosystems services.
