Calendar3 October 2024

The activities during this quarter highlight Ipieca’s role in supporting UN conventions and initiatives. I took part in the part in the first leadership council meeting of the Industrial Transition Accelerator - launched at COP28 UAE - while secretariat and member representatives participated in various UN workshops, events and webinars.

We launched nine guidance and resources, including the first completely digital version of a guidance with our Meaningful engagement practitioner guidance. We also continued to put environmental and social performance on the agenda at industry events, including the SPE International Health, Safety, Environment, and Sustainability (IHSE) Conference, where the Ipieca secretariat presented on almost 20 panel and poster sessions.

The Industrial Transition Accelerator leadership council

The first leadership council meeting of the Industrial Transition Accelerator (ITA) took place during Climate Week NYC. Launched at COP28 UAE, the ITA aims to accelerate decarbonization across sectors in heavy industry and heavy-duty transport. It was great to meet the leaders representing the other sectors and start to work together on identifying synergies, technologies and good practices that can support these important drivers of the global economy to decarbonise.

Technical inputs to UN workshops, webinar and meetings

Ipieca secretariat representatives attended the 60th sessions of the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice and the Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SB 60) of the UNFCCC in Bonn in June. SB 60 convened government, business and NGO representatives to provide negotiators with the scientific and technical knowledge needed to make informed and ambitious decisions during COP29 in Baku. Check out our Ipieca Insights article for a quick overview of the issues discussed on site.

In July, Ipieca Deputy CEO Sophie Depraz and Ipieca Sustainability and Social Performance Director Isabel Miranda represented Ipieca at the High-level Political Forum, the main UN platform for the SDGs. They took part in events organised by UN DESA, USCIB, WBA and GRI. In the same month, Isabel also spoke on the UNEP webinar on social and gender considerations in the energy sector.

In line with our core role of supporting the UN, we make a point of raising awareness of UN days and sharing good practice guidance which aligns with the themes of these days. This quarter we promoted World Maritime Day and the International Day of the World’s Indigenous People.

Good practice to support a just transition

Complementary to our role in supporting UN conventions, is the production of good practice guidance, which supports oil, gas and alternative energy companies contribute to these conventions. Developing guidance across the interconnected areas of climate, nature, people and sustainability means we work on these issues in a holistic way, helping to support an energy transition that cares for people and nature.

This quarter we published nine good practice guidance and tools covering important and emerging sustainability issues.

We launched the Meaningful engagement practitioner guidance in PDF and digital versions, which is all about how to make stakeholder engagement meaningful through broader, inclusive and ongoing two way processes.

With increasing global movement of goods and materials, alien invasive species (AIS) is becoming more of an issue and something that will certainly be on the agenda at the upcoming UN CBD COP16, as target 6 of the Global Biodiversity Framework covers this topic specifically. We published an update to the Invasive alien species and the energy industry guidance, which provides guidance for prevention and management of IAS across all project phases, from exploration to decommissioning, for onshore and offshore oil, gas and renewables projects.

Other guidance and resources launched include:

Taking our guidance on the road

We continue to make the most of speaking and networking opportunities at events to share our good practice with the energy industry.

Notably we took part in almost 20 panel and poster sessions at SPE ISHES. Ipieca Chair Paul Krisha spoke at Gastech on the ‘Driving purposeful industry progress on methane reduction’, sharing Ipieca guidance on methane reduction. It was great to attend the first ever Global Energy Transition (GET) event and even better to see the just transition take such prominence. Ipieca Senior Nature Manager Dr Polly Hill presented on Ipieca’s marine spill prevention, preparedness and response guidance at Oil Spill India.

Welcome to Pertamina

I am pleased to welcome Pertamina to our group of member companies working to lead the oil, gas and alternative energy industry through a sustainable energy transition.
