IPIECA ran the first in a series of peer to peer training workshops on managing Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services issues in the oil and gas industry on 7 and 8 October, in Houston, Texas. Co-hosted by ExxonMobil and ConocoPhillips, the workshop provided an opportunity for 60 representatives from across IPIECA and OGP members, together with invited non-members, to learn from industry experts in the field.
Through a series of modules, participants learnt about BES concepts and also the business case for BES. Participants then explored each stage of the asset lifecycle in relation to BES - from screening, scoping, baseline and impact assessments to managing and mitigating dependencies and impacts. Monitoring, reporting and verification as well as integrating BES into business processes were also discussed. Learning was facilitated through the use of interactive elements such as live quiz questions and hypothetical case study exercises.
IPIECA will be running this workshop again in other global locations – the next is likely to take place in Europe in spring 2015. Details will be confirmed in due course and shared with members. If you would like to flag your interest in attending the next workshop, please email Philip.Ruck@ipieca.org who will be in contact nearer the time with more information.
