IPIECA attended the Next-Gen Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Shared Value Forum in Calgary, Canada on 13 February. The forum, which brings together corporate and private sector leaders, was the largest CSR event ever held in Canada with over 500 participants. Jeff Flood, Senior Associate for IPIECA, presented on the association’s current social responsibility initiatives during the second day of workshops. Jeff highlighted IPIECA’s most recent guidance and practical tools for the oil and gas industry including the human rights impact assessment guide, the operational level grievance mechanism good practice survey and the human rights due diligence guidance.
More broadly, the Forum provided a series of interactive panel discussions which aimed to determine the future direction of CSR and in particular the influence of the extractive sector. Several of the panel discussions included speakers from the extractive sectors, with one session focused entirely on the ways in which oil and gas and mining companies can create measurable positive impacts using the concept of shared value. IPIECA will monitor the outcomes of the conference, which could potentially see the launch of an ongoing discussion on CSR in the extractive sector in Canada.
