One of Ipieca’s core roles is to support UN conventions and agreements. We provide technical inputs to these when requested, raise awareness and support as well as develop good practice guidance which enables the oil, gas and alternative energy industry to contribute to them.
This quarter Ipieca attended the Bonn Climate Conference, supporting preparations for COP30 and provided technical input to the IMO’s Marine Environment Protection Committee meeting. We also raised awareness of the UN Ocean Conference and various UN International Days, as well publishing five resources aligned with UN conventions and initiatives.
UN conferences
Bonn Climate Conference
Ipieca secretariat representatives attended the conference in our non-lobby observer capacity.

UN Ocean Conference 2025
Ipieca raised awareness of the event and Ipieca Nature Senior Manager Dr. Polly Hill participated in the launch of the Malta Manifesto, an urgent call to protect people and planet from oil pollution caused by shipwrecks left by two World Wars.

IMO MEPC 83 session
In its observer capacity, Ipieca delegates attended IMO MEPC 83, where they engaged in technical discussions in the working group on reduction of GHG emissions from ships, and provided input around IMO sustainable fuels certification framework, IMO life cycle analysis guidelines and the IMO net-zero framework.
Guidance to drive action on UN conventions
The fifth edition of the Sustainability reporting guidance for the oil and gas industry
UN conventions it aligns with:
The Paris Agreement recognises the importance of a just transition for a successful and equitable shift to a low-carbon economy.
The UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs) provide a framework for businesses to respect human rights throughout the transition to a low-carbon economy, ensuring that the transition is equitable and doesn't exacerbate existing inequalities.
SDG 8 and SDG 10 highlight that a just transition should create jobs and provide support for workers and communities transitioning away from fossil fuels, ensuring that the benefits of the transition are shared equitably and that no one is left behind.
Energy efficiency compendium
UN conventions it aligns with:
- Analysis from the IEA demonstrates that up to 40% of the emission abatement required by the Paris Agreement could be delivered by energy efficiency.
Supporting the IMO Net-Zero Framework: decarbonisation of the maritime sector
This fact sheet explains Ipieca’s role in driving shipping decarbonisation and its support for the IMO.
An IMO observer since 1995, Ipieca contributes technical expertise and develops good practice guidance to support the IMO’s life cycle assessment development, and the supply, uptake and safe handling of low-carbon fuels and alternative fuels.
UN conventions it aligns with:
- This fact sheet raises awareness of and support for the IMO’s Net-Zero Framework.
Carbon capture and storage (CCS) webinar series insight report
Ipieca, Society of Petroleum Engineers Gaia, International Association of Oil & Gas Producers and Oil and Gas Climate Initiative collaborated on a webinar series sharing knowledge and good practice around the scaling up of CCS technology, including key issues, environmental responsibility, financial incentives, and liability concerns. This document provides a high-level summary of each webinar.
UN conventions it aligns with:
- The Paris Agreement. The IPCC Sixth Assessment Report attaches considerable importance to CCS, with most global modelled climate change mitigation pathways which achieve net zero including deployment of CCS.
Worker welfare resources
These resources provide working definitions and a summary of key tools and guidance produced by selected external stakeholders on proactive worker engagement and responsible recruitment.
UN conventions it aligns with:
- Worker engagement and responsible recruitment are practical applications of the UNGPs, falling under its second pillar, which focuses on corporate responsibility to respect human rights.
Adding value to UN international days
Ipieca raises awareness of UN days among its members and through its external channels, sharing good practice guidance which aligns with the themes of these days. This quarter we promoted:
Ipieca Principles - what we stand for
A condition of membership, the Ipieca Principles are grouped under the four themes of Ipieca's 2025-2028 Strategy. Each theme includes two principles: the first drives support for a UN convention or initiative, the second advances the environmental and social performance of member companies' operations.
- Climate
- Support the Paris Agreement and its aims.
- Advance emissions reduction and innovation and enable adoption of low-carbon products and solutions across oil, gas and/or alternative energy.
- Nature
- Support the aims of the UN Convention for Biological Diversity.
- Responsibly manage operational impacts on the natural environment and ecosystem services.
- People
- Support the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights.
- Promote the health, wellbeing and social inclusion of workforces and local communities relating to operations, and contribute to the social and economic development of host communities and countries.
- Sustainability
- Support the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development as embodied by the Sustainable Development Goals.
- Integrate sustainability across activities, increase transparency and engage with key stakeholders.
