Ipieca works with its members to reduce methane emissions. As a supporting organisation to the Methane Guiding Principles, Ipieca recognises that natural gas can have an important role to play in a low-emissions future, if methane emissions are controlled across the gas value chain. Through organizing workshops to the development of a methane glossary and publication of factsheets, Ipieca aims to enhance knowledge among the oil and gas industry and external stakeholders.

On 2 November 2020, Ipieca held a virtual methane workshop, which brought together industry members, scientists, regulators and intergovernmental organization representatives from around the world to share their knowledge and expertise. This report summarizes the presentations and discussions that took place during the workshop.

The workshop focused on four themes:

  1. Methane science: the latest scientific understanding of methane interaction in the atmosphere, the global methane cycle, methane's contribution to global warming and the different approaches to methane measurement.
  2. Methane regulations: insights into the regulatory landscape of several regions around the world.
  3. Methane initiatives: updates from some of the current voluntary methane emissions reduction initiatives.
  4. Setting global expectations: learnings from recent efforts in developing and setting methane reduction targets.
