COP16 reconvened in Rome, 25 - 27 February 2025, after the meeting in Colombia last year was suspended as a quorum was not met during the closing plenary.
In Rome, Parties to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (UNCBD) agreed on all outstanding issues from COP16 Colombia.
Key outcomes
A roadmap for the mobilisation of resources, including at least USD 200 billion per year by 2030, to advance the Global Biodiversity Framework was agreed.
Parties also agreed on a monitoring framework to track nations’ progress on achieving the GBF targets.
The Cali Fund, established in Cop16 Colombia, was also launched, enabling companies benefiting from digital sequence information on genetic resources to share some of the proceeds with the biodiverse countries of origin, with half of the fund allocated to Indigenous Peoples and local communities.

Ipieca and the UN CBD
Ipieca’s work on biodiversity and ecosystem services is underpinned by the UNCBD, support of which is the third Ipieca Principle, a condition of Ipieca membership.
Ipieca has official observer status and attended the first UNCBD COP in 1994.
Ahead of COP16 Colombia in 2024, Ipieca published Ipieca Members’ actions and contribution opportunities to the GBF, showing how Ipieca members are contributing to the global goal of halting and reversing biodiversity loss.
