The Ipieca monthly article round-up showcases recent sustainability-related achievements, projects and news from Ipieca members and organizations that Ipieca partners with, demonstrating their commitment to advancing environmental and social performance across oil and gas and achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

The August edition features members collaborating on projects to achieve net-zero carbon shipping and net-zero emissions from Canada's oil sands operations, and puts a spotlight on projects that are advancing green hydrogen production, liquid hydrogen storage solutions, detection of methane leaks, and carbon capture and storage. We also recognise Eni's ongoing commitment to respecting human rights, and share the new strategy from IOGP.

bp has agreed to commit to a long-term collaboration on the development of new alternative fuels and low-carbon solutions for the shipping industry, with plans to second experts to work on relevant research and development projects in the Center's portfolio and help provide guidance for transition strategies.

Oil Sands Pathways to Net Zero alliance takes phased approach to help Canada meet climate goals

Cenovus and Suncor have declared their ambition to work together and with governments to achieve net zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from their oil sands operations by 2050. The three-phase plan aims to reduce emissions of 68 Mt of CO2 per year via multiple pathways, including electrification, fuel substitution, energy efficiency, carbon capture, process improvements and emerging technologies.

Chevron

Chevron invests in renewable fuels company Raven SR

As part of its commitment to provide affordable, reliable, ever-cleaner energy, Chevron is investing in Raven SR, which has a patented steam/CO2 reformation process designed to reduce emissions and produce more green hydrogen. The investment will help Raven build modular waste-to-hydrogen renewable fuel production units at landfills and other methane-emitting sites.

Eni publishes Eni for human rights for third year in a row

Illustrating its commitment to respecting human rights in line with the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, Eni has published its third Eni for human rights report. The report provides transparency around the company's approach, challenges and performance on managing human rights issues across employees, local communities, suppliers, business partners and in security activities.

ExxonMobil

Tracking methane leaks with aerial technology

Using sensors attached to airplanes, ExxonMobil is able to scan and pinpoint methane leaks from across vast and remote areas, such as the Permian Basin, leading to more efficient repairs. ExxonMobil has submitted this model process to the Environmental Protection Agency as a potential new framework for detecting methane and reducing emissions.

McDermott

McDermott completes design of world's largest liquid hydrogen sphere

McDermott's CB&I Storage Solutions business has completed the conceptual design of a double-wall liquid hydrogen sphere with a storage capacity eight times larger than the world's largest liquid hydrogen sphere currently under construction. Storage solutions are key to scaling up liquid hydrogen solutions and supporting a hydrogen economy.

Wintershall Dea

Project Greensand CCS moves towards pilot stage

Consortium partners Wintershall Dea, INEOS, Maersk and Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland (GEUS) have announced that the Danish North Sea Greensand carbon capture and storage (CCS) project will undergo a pilot phase to demonstrate that CO2 can be injected into an offshore reservoir in an environmentally safe manner. When completed the project could store up to 8 million tonnes of CO2 per year.
