The Ipieca sustainability article round-up showcases recent sustainability-related achievements, projects and news from Ipieca members, demonstrating their support for the Ipieca Principles around advancing environmental and social performance across the energy transition. We also highlight initiatives from our partner organizations and share insights from key United Nations meetings.
Low-carbon products and solutions take centre-stage in the October round-up as we lead up to COP28 at the end of November. In addition to member initiatives, we share insights from ADIPEC and progress from the Oil and Gas Climate Initiative. We also highlight a new partnership for enhanced health from Eni, a partnership to commercialise OMV’s plastics circularity solution, and insights from the Ipieca Biodiversity and ecosystem services peer-to-peer workshop.

bp subsidiary starts up first of its kind renewable natural gas plant
bp's Archaea Energy has opened its Archaea modular design renewable natural gas plant in Medora, Indiana. Situated next to a landfill, the plant captures landfill gas and converts it into renewable natural gas, electricity and heat. The Medora plant has the capacity to process 3,200 cubic feet of landfill gas per minute, enough to heat over 13,000 homes annually.
ENEOS
ENEOS to work with HIF Global to accelerate eFuels production
HIF Global, a leading eFuels company, and ENEOS have signed a cooperation agreement to promote the sale of carbon-neutral fuel in Japan. It includes the supply of eFuels produced in South America, USA and Australia to ENEOS, as well as exploring the development of a carbon dioxide supply chain and eGasoline and jet fuel production facilities in Japan.
Eni
Supporting the health of people and communities through health research
Eni and Dompé farmaceutici have signed a letter of intent to initiate collaborative research and development efforts focused on public health in areas where Eni operates, as well as other global health issues. The partnership aims to accelerate the discovery of new medicines and vaccines to address future healthcare emergencies. The collaboration also includes research on health security related to new energy supply.
INPEX
Construction of one of world’s largest CO2-methanation test facilities commences
INPEX and Osaka Gas have commenced construction of one of the world's largest CO2-methanation test facilities, capable of producing 400 normal cubic metres of methane per hour, equivalent to the daily consumption of about 10,000 households in Japan. The project is part of a joint technical development initiative aimed at carbon-neutralizing gas through CO2 methanation, with a demonstration test involving synthetic methane production scheduled for 2025.
OMV
OMV and Wood collaborate to commercialise circular economy solution
OMV has signed a global commercial licensing agreement with Wood for OMV's ReOil® technology. ReOil is a patented chemical recycling process that converts end-of-life plastic waste into pyrolysis oil, which can replace conventional feedstock and enable circularity of plastics.
Oxy + ADNOC
Oxy and ADNOC to commence preliminary study of direct air capture facility in the UAE
Oxy's subsidiary, 1PointFive, and ADNOC are collaborating on a preliminary engineering study to build a 1 million tonne-per-year direct air capture (DAC) facility in the UAE, marking the first megatonne-scale DAC project outside the United States. The initiative aims to assess the feasibility of using DAC technology to further carbon management efforts in line with global climate goals.
