Cepsa and CEU San Pablo University have established the ‘Cepsa - CEU Green Digital’ Chair to foster research and development in digitalisation projects for the energy transition, focusing on training young talent in technologies like artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things.
ENEOS certifies products that contribute to avoided emissions
ENEOS has announced a new initiative to certify products that contribute to avoided emissions. This certification aims to highlight products that help reduce greenhouse gas emissions through their use or production processes.
The report details Eni’s efforts to cut methane emissions across its operations. Key achievements include a 95% reduction in fugitive methane emissions and an 86% reduction in methane intensity since 2014. Eni aims for near-zero methane emissions by 2030 and has implemented advanced monitoring and mitigation technologies to achieve this goal.
Northern Lights celebrates completion of world’s first commercial CO2 transport and storage service
The Northern Lights project in Norway, which is a joint venture between Equinor, Shell and TotalEnergies, has launched the world’s first commercial CO2 transport and storage service, capable of storing up to 1.5 million tonnes of CO2 annually. The facilities are now ready to receive CO2, marking a significant milestone in the advancement of carbon capture and storage technology.
ExxonMobil to develop largest carbon capture and storage site in the USA
ExxonMobil has secured a lease for over 271,000 acres offshore Texas to develop the largest carbon capture and storage (CCS) site in the USA. This project aims to sequester 50 million tonnes of CO2 annually by 2030. Royalties from the lease agreement, made with the Texas General Land Office, will support the state’s public school fund, enhancing education and promoting local community development.
Halliburton and ExxonMobil partner with LSU College of Engineering to advance CO2 research
A new CO2 research well will be drilled at LSU’s Petroleum Engineering Research Training and Testing Lab, which will allow for the study of CO2 under realistic field conditions. The collaboration between educators, researchers and the energy industry aims to train the future workforce and support the global scale up of CCS projects needed for the energy transition.
Supporting Indonesia’s energy self-sufficiency and net-zero targets through low-carbon technology innovations
Pertamina is supporting Indonesia’s energy self-sufficiency policy and net-zero by 2060 target by advancing four low-carbon technologies—biofuels, petrochemicals, geothermal energy, and carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCS/CCUS)—and engaging local communities in green energy use. In 2023, Pertamina exceeded its Scope 1 and 2 emissions reductions targets by 24%.
QatarEnergy announces enhanced In-Country Value Programme
QatarEnergy has launched an enhanced In-Country Value programme under its Tawteen initiative to support Qatar’s sustainable economic development. This updated programme, developed with key stakeholders, includes a refined in-country value formula, a bonus scheme for positive contributions, and a policy to aid local manufacturers. The programme has already increased the local contribution of the energy sector from 14% to 28.5% and created around 7,000 jobs.
Engineering study charts potential of carbon capture technology to help decarbonise shipping
A recent engineering study by OGCI, the Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation and Stena Bulk, along with other maritime organizations, has demonstrated the potential of onboard carbon capture and storage (OCCS) technology to reduce shipping emissions. The study found that retrofitting a carbon capture system on the tanker Stena Impero could cut its CO2 emissions by up to 20% annually, with a fuel consumption penalty of just under 10%.
Ipieca publishes member case studies on contributing to the Global Biodiversity Framework
Ahead of COP16, taking place in Colombia, 21 October - 1 November, Ipieca published a document detailing the actions Ipieca member companies are taking to contribute towards the goals of the Global Biodiversity Framework.
Ipieca support for UN conventions – July to September
One of Ipieca’s core roles is to support UN conventions and agreements. Key activities from July to September included participating in the first Industrial Transition Accelerator, attending climate conferences, and promoting awareness of UN international days.
The February round-up demonstrates Ipieca member leadership in sustainability through formal recognitions, pioneering projects, and environmental and social investment programmes aimed at improving water quality, enhancing community resilience and supporting technical education for a just transition.
