Today is UNEP’s World Environment Day, an annual event that seeks to raise awareness on environmental issues and encourage global action to protect nature and planet Earth.
IPIECA, as the global oil and gas association for environmental and social issues, is committed to helping the industry be a ‘part of the solution’ to improve the management of environmental and social issues worldwide.
Our environmental practices and activities cover a wide-range of areas such as:
- IPIECA has a long history of producing guidance to promote the responsible and effective management of biodiversity and ecosystem services (BES) for the oil and gas industry. For example, the Biodiversity and ecosystem services fundamentals – Guidance document for the oil and gas industry, outlines a management framework for the better management of BES.
- The IPIECA Global Water Tool for Oil and Gas (a customised version of the WBCSD Global Water Tool) and the GEMI® Local Water Tool for Oil and Gas™ help companies effectively, efficiently and easily monitor, assess and manage water risks for better environmental management. The Water Risk Assessment E-learning Training Course aims to improve uptake and implementation throughout the oil and gas industry.
- IPIECA has been engaging in UN processes on climate change for over 20 years and welcomed the Paris Agreement, seeing it as a crucial step in global efforts to address climate change. The Paris Puzzle – The pathway to a low-emissions future represents our global membership view on the key components of efforts to address climate change, and demonstrate the industry’s commitment to meeting the challenge.
- The Global Initiative: an umbrella programme under which governments (through the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the oil industry (through IPIECA) and other partners are working together to assist countries in developing national structures and capability for oil spill preparedness and response.
Understanding and promoting good practice for the effective management of the environment alongside oil and gas operations is key for the future of the industry. Please visit our library for more information on our environmental good practices.
