Today is World Water Day 2019, an annual UN event aiming to focus attention on the importance of water. The theme of this year's World Water Day is 'Leaving no one behind'.
This theme explores the central aim of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development; as sustainable development progresses, everyone must benefit. As part of this, the UN Sustainable Development Goal 6 'Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all' encompasses the idea of leaving no one behind. Access to clean water is essential to life and to improving health, reducing inequality and ending poverty, and is considered a human right. Water is also essential to all segments of the oil and gas value chain. Therefore, it is necessary to balance such requirements with local water needs, particularly in water-scarce locations.
Ipieca's work on water risk helps companies to evaluate their water needs in relation to the local context throughout each part of the oil and gas value chain. Risk management requires strong water stewardship, an integrated water resource management approach and ongoing risk assessments.
